John Gilliat, Rossi Tzonkov & Ritmo Caliente!

July 26th, 2012 was my first performance with a group I created with Rossi Tzonkov called “Ritmo Caliente”

The idea to form this group was from Smooth Jazz Artist Gabriel Mark Hasselbach. Gabriel introduced me to Rossi and from there we added Brent Gubbels on bass and Chris Haas on drums and percussion.

The band is in it’s development stage so there will be a lot of tweaking with music, arrangements, instrumentation, etc… One thing for sure is that Rossi and I are having a great time working together in my own group, Ritmo Caliente, and Carumba.

So check out the video and by all means… offer up your feedback and suggestions!

My Vacation in Las Vegas

Tomorrow morning I’m off to Las Vegas for a little R&R. I’m actually traveling without a guitar! (This is virtually unheard of in my world)

It’s been raining here in Vancouver all month and it’s going to be so wonderful to finally see a little sunshine.

We’ll begin this fabulous adventure with a trip to Bellingham Washington where in Farehaven we sat for lunch and listened to live jazz.

That evening e spent the night at the Coachman Inn. Only $65! It was very clean and a good place to get a nights rest before we catch our light to Vegas.

Now for a big travel tip…

My wife & I booked our Las Vegas vacation with Allegiant Air.

“Be sure to pay the following extras on line as Allegiant Air will charge more at the airport”

It’s a great deal out of the gate paying only $869 for…

- air fare for 2 from Bellingham
- a round trip shuttle to the Vegas hotel
- 3 nights stay at the Aria
& 2 tickets to Viva Elvis

What’s the catch…

Well, so far I discovered you’ll have to pay an extra $36 to $100 to sit with your significant other on the plane. (Allegiant Air likes to assign you seats at opposite ends of the aircraft as part of your low rate. Lol)

I paid only $44 extra for our seats.

You will also be paying for each cheched bag. I paid $40. Here’s a little tip…

Don’t over stuff your bag. (I had to pull my shoes out of mine and carry them on the plane as my luggage was 2lbs over weight, lol)

Once we arrived in Las Vegas it was off the the Aria. I really liked the hotel. Big high tech rooms with a remote everywhere to control everything from your TV to the curtains! You can check out personal videos on the Aria rooms on youtube. (as I did before making my decision to stay)

One big disappointment was the lack of good free live music within the casinos. Back in the 80′s when I was playing them with a David Bowie tribute band, you could find great live music groups everywhere.

Now it’s a couple of piano duo’s or a soloist.
