Playing guitar at Furry Creek for Expert Recruiters

Today I’m off to Furry Creek BC to play guitar at a private event for Expert Recruiters.

Joining me on this gig will be bass guitarist Brent Gubbels. For those of you that have never heard of Furry Creek, it’s a beautiful location and golf course just half way to Whistler along the sea to sky highway.

I’ll be leaving my home at 1pm with a Starbucks coffee and my Stride gum. Oh yeah… I’ll also have my guitar and a small sound system.

I’ll then drive an hour to Vancouver to pick up Brent. From there we’ll car pool for an hour or so to Furry Creek.

Join me behind the scenes at the gig! Here’s the video…

Playing guitar for the Canada Safeway Foundation

Once again I’ll be performing with my fiery rumba flamenco trio. This time we’ll be playing at the New Vancouver Convention Center for Canada Safeway.

The room that we’ll be performing is called the summit room on level 3 so I’ll have an escort to take me there from the parking entrance.

I always thought of Safeway as a large grocery store chain. What I was totally unaware of was that every year the Safeway Foundation raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to find a cure for prostate cancer. That makes this company a superstar in my eyes.

Here is Episode 9 of Guitar Slinger to take you behind the scenes at this great event!

Joining me on the gig was bass guitarist Brent Gubbels and percussionist Lyndon Dewitt.

This gig was a lot of fun. Firstly because we sounded really good in the venue. The Summit Room is a great sounding room!

Also it’s very rare to have couples dancing to our music on a corporate event. That was very special.

Performing for A Taste of BC wine festival

Performance at A Taste of BC's Finest!

Vendors are setting up their tables inside and outside the venue

Today I’m off to White Rock to play with my rumba flamenco, latin jazz trio for the “A Taste of BC” wine festival.

This gig was nice as I didn’t have to bring my complete sound system. The client supplied a sound tech with his own sound gear for the event.

On the gig tonight will be percussionist Lyndon Dewitt and bass guitarist Brent Gubbels.

My trio performance was to begin at 6:45 pm so I arrived at 5 pm to give myself lots of time to set up. When I first arrived I noticed tents set up all over the back of the venue with vendors everywhere to promote wines and restaurants. I was a little concerned that we may be performing outside for this event however, I met with my contact inside the venue and found we had a stage in a great little location within the building.

Our stage and Rumba flamenco trio setup

My on stage view of the event

We quickly began setting up our gear on stage then ran an XLR feed (cable) to the main sound system to fill the room.

Once we were reading the client asked us to begin a little early as the room began to fill up with people. I guess we began 10 or 15 minutes early.

As we were performing we were given an events schedule on the stage so we would take our breaks during speeches and prize draws. The event was to raise money for a charity. (it’s always great to perform at an event to raise money for a good cause)

It looked as though everyone really enjoyed our performance throughout the evening. At 10:15 pm we were scheduled to finish. Then It was time to quickly tear down the gear and get home as I would be up again early to perform a mothers day brunch out at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country club in the morning.

Performing at the Five Sails Restaurant in the Pan Pacific Hotel for RWH Myers

The Pan Pacific hotel in Vancouver BC

Arriving at the Five Sails Restaurant for the gig

Today I’ll be leaving my home to perform at the fabulous Five Sails Restaurant at the Pan Pacific Hotel in beautiful Vancouver BC.

This is a great location on the Vancouver waterfront overlooking the water with a wonderful view of the North Shore of West Vancouver.

Today I’ll be performing as a rumba flamenco, latin jazz duo with bass guitarist Brent Gubbels. This will be another private corporate event for RWH Myers & Company. RWH Myers is a loss accounting firm http://www.rwhmyers.com.

I’ll be leaving my home at 3:30pm and plan to arrive at the venue for 5pm. (I’ll also be making a short stop by the Vancouver Musicians Association office on the way in to pick up $$$ from a previous gig)

So, back to the gig at hand…

Our duo guitar set up at the Five Sales

Brent Gubbels (bass) preparing for our performance

I usually perform at the Five Sails every Christmas and New Years Eve however this may be the first time playing there for a corporate event. I’ll give you the next update once I arrive.

I arrived at the Vancouver’s Musician Association office at 4:15ish and was disappointed to find their doors locked. They must be working some weird musician hours. Oh well, on to the gig!

I arrived downtown just before 5pm and I parked in a parking garage a block away from the venue as parking at the hotel would cost me an extra $10.

I arrived at the Five Sails just after 5pm. I’m really early as the gig will begin at 6:30pm and we’ll be playing until 10:30pm. (With breaks of course)

The view from my chair while performing

The fantastic view from my performance location

The client had us set up so we were hidden around the corner of the restaurant. They wanted to hear us (very quietly) but didn’t really want us to be seen. At least not in the middle of the room.

Also the client began arriving early so we began around 10 minutes earlier than scheduled. We then took our first break at 7:30 pm then played on with 45 minutes sets and 15 minute breaks until 10:30 pm.

This is one of those corporate background music gigs where if no one says anything to us it means we’re doing a great job.

Next up, I’ll be performing in White Rock, BC for a Wine Festival

Stay tuned…
