In the Band – Behind the scenes at Taverna Gorgona

The newly renovated patio at Taverna Gorgona

Today I’m off to Ladner, BC to perform at the best Greek restaurant I know!

My performance this wonderful evening will be as a solo rumba flamenco guitarist at Taverna Gorgona. TG is also one of few restaurants that I play at on a regular basis. It’s mostly due to the amazing food and because most of my local performances are private functions, it’s a great place where my friends, local fans and family can come to hear me perform.

Inside Taverna Gorgona

I’ll be leaving my home at 3 pm, arrive at 5 and begin playing guitar at 6. This a long one as the gig ends at 10 pm.

I’m also happy to announce that this will be Episode 3 of JG’s Gig Cam (Let me know if you have a better name for my little reality show)

Here is JG’s Gig Cam Episode 3 – Playing at Taverna Gorgona

Fiery Rumba Flamenco duo performance No. 2 for Architectural Institute of BC

The new Vancouver Convention Centre

Today is day 2 performing at the new Vancouver Convention Center for the Architectural Institute of BC.

For this gig we’ll be performing once again as a rumba flamenco duo however today Lyndon is in Vegas so this evening Emad Armoush will be filling in on percussion.

Once again I’ve taken my “Gig Cam”
with me so you can join me
behind the scenes today
on the gig.

Here’s today’s Gig Cam video…

So this gig will begin at 6pm so I’ll leave at 3pm for downtown Vancouver. I’ll be bringing enough gear to fill a room with 500 people. The gig today is also a short one, only a one hour performance. So it kind of breaks down as…

  • 2 hours driving
  • 1 hour setup and sound check
  • 1 hour performance
  • 30 minutes tear down
  • 2 hours loading out and driving

I love the work that I do however 90% is “the work” and 10% is actual guitar playing.

I think I’m really enjoying doing these live “Gig Cam” video’s as you really get a good feel for what it’s like as a working independent musician. (at least on the gigs)

It might also be fun to do a “working musician cam video” as well however I think the business side could bore you to tears.

Currently I’m building my new web site, trying to write for my next cd, always working my social media and creating new lesson material for YourGuitarSchool.com.

Anyways, enjoy the video and please send me feedback.

Next up… I’ll be back at Taverna Gorgona for a solo rumba flamenco guitar gig.

Stay tuned…

Playing solo rumba flamenco guitar at Taverna Gorgona

Tonight I’m back to play solo rumba flamenco guitar in a wonderful Greek restaurant in Ladner, BC.

I usually book myself in once a month however I haven’t performed there since November of last year.

Taverna Gorgona is a great place to sit and relax with a nice hot coffee and play. Best of all is the amazing food!

For tonight’s gig I’ll leave my home around 3:45 pm and plan to arrive at the venue for 5pm. I don’t have to bring a very large sound system as I will plug into the house system. I’ll bring my Bose T1 mixer with a couple of small Yamaha monitors.

My performance will begin at 6pm and I’ll take 2 or 3 breaks before I end at 10pm. Then I’ll sit and enjoy a wonderful meal.

Performance at Taverna Gorgona with guitarist Benjamin Woods

Guitar Duo set up at Taverna Gorgona

Guitar Duo set up at Taverna Gorgona

Once again I’m back performing at Taverna Gorgona and what a great night it was. We had a great turn out and I had a blast performing with Ben Woods. What a great guitarist!

If you haven’t heard Ben or listened to his guitar playing you really need to check him out. You can visit Ben online at www.spanishguitarplayer.com

Next I would like to thank everyone who came out to see us!

Ben and I first met years ago, online. We were both nylon string guitar players and band leaders both trying to learn from each other how to better market our music through website link exchanges, etc… We also met in person at the LA Namm show a few years ago.

As you may know I have been working with guitar luthier Daniel Turner in Victoria and Daniel was also a big fan of Ben’s guitar playing. Daniel thought it would be really great to have Ben and I play as a guitar duo so he set it up.

I had invited Ben to stay with us while he was here to work on the music for Daniel’s project and I had also created a performance here at Taverna Gorgona.

Our performance at TG was so much fun, not only were we playing my music, but we had also performed some great rumba flamenco style metal classics. Music from the Scorpions, Iron Maiden and Malmsteen.

The gig that night was from 6pm to 10pm. Then afterwards I sat and relaxed while Ben and flamenco dancer, vocalist Stephanie Pedraza entertained us with a wonderful intimate table side acoustic flamenco performance.

Next it was off to Victoria to shoot the video for Daniel Turners Sola guitar project.
