My Cd artwork featured in Jon Chappell’s new book “The Recording Guitarist – A Guide for Home & Studio

I was very flattered to have been contacted recently by Jon Chappell. Jon is a multi-style guitarist, arranger, and former editor-in-chief of Guitar magazine.

Jon ran across the artwork for my CD “Beyond Boundaries” in a Google search. He loved the artwork and wanted to use it for his new book “The Recording Guitarist–A Guide for Home & Studio,” to be published by Hal Leonard this summer. (This is actually a revised edition of a book he wrote a decade ago.) Check it out here: www.halleonard.com

Beyond Boundaries Cover ArtMy cd will appear is in a section discussing CD packaging and “the right way to do things.” Jon is advising musicians on the importance of their CD art, and, as in all parts of the book, He would like to show real-world examples that illustrate the positive ideals of the subject under discussion. It’s nice to hear my cd is a shining example of that!

I would also like to mention that it’s very important to use an extremely good photographer and Carmen Tome’s photo’s are amazing! A Big thank you to Carmen for her photography of all the cd artwork you see on Beyond Boundaries.

Playing Guitar for the Columbia University Dept. of Pediatrics

My setup at the Sheraton Wall CentreToday I’m playing and performing for the Columbia University Dept. of Pediatrics. The event is being held at the Sheraton Wall Centre in downtown Vancouver. It’s a 7:30pm start and ends at 9:30pm. I’m going to arrive at 6pm because the Sheraton’s parking garage and it’s two towers can make the load in a bit confusing. I’ll be using my small sound system as it will be a very small group of 30 to 40 people. I’ll be playing in the Orca room located on the third floor.

This time the load in was easy. I found a place to park right beside the elevator that took me from the parking garage right to the floor the banquet room was on. (This venue isn’t always that easy) I’ve performed here before and it can be multiple elevators and a lot of walking.

This event was one of those background music gigs were the room is very crowded. I had people bumping into my guitar while I was playing. It was also a very noisy room from all the networking chatter which is all very common for a corporate reception gig.

My small sound system

Everyone seemed to really enjoy my performance as I had a lot of great comments from the guests. Also had a guest ask if he could play a few song on my guitar. I once allowed a guest to play it and he dropped it! So I don’t allow it anymore.

At 9:30 I packed up and then it was time to head home. Another successful event.

The photo on the left is what my sound system looks like all packed up. It takes around 15 minutes to set it up.

Below is a photo of the Sheraton Wall Centre Orca room were I’ll be performing background music for the client.

Taverna Gorgona

Taverna Gorgona, Ladner, BC

I don’t often play restaurants unless it’s a corporate function or sometimes it’s a fill in date during a tour however there are a few exceptions.

Taverna Gorgona is a Greek restaurant located in Ladner, BC. It’s a town just minutes from Tsawwassen were I grew up. I try to book into the venue once a month if my schedule permits.

My set up inside Taverna GorgonaThe owner, Franco and staff are wonderful. And I love the food!

Today I’ll be arriving at 5pm for a 6pm start and I’ll play until 10pm. I set up in a tight little space, with my small sound system then I patch into Taverna Gorgona’s house system to fill the rest of the venue, On sunny summer days I’ll set up outside and use my wireless system to patch into the house.

Two gigs – One day

Today it’s a double header! From noon to 3pm I’ll be playing at the Salt Tasting Room located in Blood Alley Square, Gastown, Vancouver. Then it’s off to Coquitlam to play a fund raiser gala diner “La Fiesta”. I’ll be helping to raise money for a long term care facility to provide music therapy and other services.

So off to the first gig…

Blood Alley Gastown Vancouver

One of the great perks to playing as a musician is being paid to travel around to some very interesting places that you may never hear about. This venue was very awsome and right in my own back yard. (so to speak)

Gastown is a very cool part of Vancouver, old brick buildings, brick and cobble stone streets. The Salt Tasting Room is a small restaurant with a very cool cellar which was were I was performing. The event was part of the Vancouver Playhouse wine festival.

The Salt Cellar in the Salt Room in Blood Alley Square, Vancouver

The cellar was quite small with a group of 50 to 70 people. Once again I used the small sound system. Everyone seemed to really enjoy my performance and I was asked to play overtime however, I had to go right away to get to the next event.

Here’s a fuzzy cel phone pic of what I see while playing for the event. Most corporate events are similar to this where I’m playing background music while everyone is busy networking. This was a really nice group to play for in a very nice sounding room.

I had 30 minutes to tear down the gear and an hour to get across town to set up for “LA FIESTA”! Looks like the client will have me back next year.

So off to the next event…

This next gig didn’t pay all that much however, it’s not allways about the money. Like I wrote earlier, this was from a good friend of mine and former guitar student who was raising money to help enhance the lives of the 76 older citizens that live at the residence.

Sometimes I will bump into other musicians working the same event. Today it was wonderful to see Pancho & Sal! They are really good friends and musicians that I had not seen in a long while. You can read more about them at: www.panchoandsal.com

Pancho was playing guitar and played the coolest kick drum I had ever seen! I wish I had a photo. They sounded great!

Here is another photo of my set up at the venue.
