Mothers Day performance at the Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club

Arriving at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club

Today I’m up at 7 am to perform solo rumba flamenco guitar for a mothers day brunch at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in beautiful Vancouver, BC.

After the trio gig last night I had to re-pack my car for the solo performance this morning. I’ll be using my small sound system with two small Yamaha PA speakers and a single powered monitor for myself.

I have 2 fifty foot speaker cables that I’ll use to place my PA speakers at either end of the venue to distribute the sound at a nice ambient level throughout the venue.

Once I was done assembling my gear it was time to do a quick sound check and begin my performance.

This morning I was to begin playing at 11 am and finish at 1 pm. I took a short 15 minute break at noon.

Most of the time I would play the 2 hours without a break however after a 4 hour performance last night my hands felt as though it would be good to give them a little rest.

That was pretty much the gig!

My gig chair is to the left of this shot

What a beautiful place to sit and watch the golf balls fly by!

No food for me at this one however it sure looked and smelled wonderful.

Once I was done it was again time to hit the road a head home.

Tomorrows gig will be with Gabriel Mark Hasselbach’s Zen Soundscapes at the new Vancouver Convention Centre.

A look back at 2010

This was a good year for me as I discovered the power of Social Media. I created a blog, discovered reverbnation, twitter, facebook, blah, blah, blah… All really wonderful tools for the independent musician.

I’m now on the top of the heap when you Google “flamenco” or “flamenco guitar” how cool is that! I’ve also tripled my web traffic which is a really big accomplishment. For years I studied and bought e-books on developing web traffic, online marketing, etc… With very little success. I gave up until I discovered Ariel Hyatt’s “Music Success in 9 Weeks” That book made my year!

As a nylon string guitarist, discovering the Fishman Aura 16 acoustic imaging pedal has been a massive find this year. For years I have been frustrated with my live guitar sound and thanks to Fishman my guitar sound is better than ever! I currently play a great flamenco guitar built by Jeff Sigurdson. I installed the LR Baggs classical element pick up, which string balance and gain make it the best nylon pickup ever! And I’ve tried a lot! You can read more about the fishman aura pedal in my previous post.

2010 was also the year I disposed of my glasses. Thank you IRIS! You guys are the best!

IRIS has been playing my music in their retail outlets so when they found out I would be a good candidate for laser eye surgery, they offered it to me and I accepted.

I now live my life in HD and it’s fantastic! No more dirty glasses. I can walk and run in the rain! No more contact lens’s, etc…

This was also the year I performed with Benjamin Woods. What a great guitarist and I’m really excited about playing with him again in an upcoming 2011 performance.

2010 was the year I performed for our Winter Olympics. What a great experience! I had multiple performances with my rumba flamenco, latin jazz quartet as well as performances with Vancouver Gypsy Jazz quartet Gypsalero.

I’ve been performing with Gypsalero for years and the year was the first time I was in the studio with the guys to begin recording a new Gypsalero cd.

This year I also began performing with Gabriel Mark Hasselbach. Gabriel is a fantastic musician that I have looked up to for years and it’s a been a thrill for me to now be gigging with him!

This year I began this blog that gives my fans a behind the scene window of what it’s like as a working musician and guitarist.

This year I’m also back to being my own manager and have began booking my own tours. I’m still looking for management however it’s been a breath of fresh air to be back doing it myself.

So first up for the new year will be my new online guitar school that new guitar students can study with me from anywhere in the world. The new site is already up but will be officially announced in January.

Gabriel Mark Hasselbach’s Zen Soundscapes returns to Whistler, BC

Once again I’m off to beautiful Whistler Mountain to perform with Gabriel Mark Hasselbach’s Zen Soundscapes at the Squamish Lilwat Cultural Centre.

This time I’ll be meeting Gabriel at his Burnaby studio to drive up in his convertible BMW. Should be a wonderful day for one of the most scenic drives in the world!

Tonight I performed with Diane Lines. Diane is a great keyboard player as well as a wonderful vocalist. Along with Gabriel is Tony Chamberlin on percussion.

Once again the gig entails us creating changes / songs and cool zen grooves on the fly. (No charts!) It’s very interesting as you never know what’s going to happen.

As always the gig was great! A lot of cool, magical music moments. After the gig it was time to hop back into Gabriels beamer and drive the 2 hour trip back down the mountain.

Back with the Zen Soundscapes Quartet in Whistler, BC

Tonight I’ll be playing guitar once again in Gabriel Mark Hasselbach’s Zen Soundscapes. We’re back in Whistler at the Squamish Cultural Centre and will be performing for the US Bank.

I spent last night in Whistler due to the previous event. Check my last post if you are planning to visit Whistler and looking for great and affordable accommodations.

I just discovered last night while playing for US Bank at the Four Seasons that this will be the same group I’ll be playing for tonight.

It’s going to be a 6pm start so I’ll arrive to set up at 5pm. Then will be playing until 9:30. Then I’ll drive back home. Tomorrow I have a day off to catch up on a few calls and work on my bathroom reno.

I’ve been renovating my house for years now. (Feels like it will never be finished) 2 bathrooms to go and I’m done!

BTW… If you are ever in Whistler a great place for breakfast (until 3pm), is the Wildwood Bistro and Bar. It’s very well known to the locals but most of the tourist would never find it. Great prices & good food.

Ok, back to the gig…

We’re all set up and ready to play at 6pm however it looks like we’ll be starting closer to 7pm. Tonight I’ll be playing guitar in the Zen Soundscapes Quartet with band leader Gabriel Mark Hasselback (an amazing horn player that I really, really enjoy playing with), pianist Tilden Webb (again an amazing keyboard/pianist) and percussionist, producer, engineer and all round great guy Tony “Tonehenge” Chamberlin.

Our first set is improvising against chord progressions, melodies and grooves we all create on the spot. It’s kind of like… one of us start an musical motif or chord progression and we all jump in to make it cool and zen like. It’s very cool as the guys I’m playing with are Amazing musicians! We’ll also mixed in a few Ottmar Liebertish and Gipsy King style tunes with a few latin jazz classics.

It was a great night and the client loved us! Time to head home to a day of bathroom renovations. Then It’s back to the Cactus Club for the duo gig with Macleans Magazine.

Stay tuned…
