Ever wanted to know what it’s like working as a freelance guitarist?
Today I’m going to take you behind the scenes at the Red Robinson Theatre!
In this Guitar Slinger episode I’ll be performing first as a solo rumba flamenco latin jazz guitarist up on the foyer balcony of the Red Robinson Theatre. Then I’ll be joining the Diane Lines Quintet in the theatre.
Last Saturday evening I played my guitar at the Capilano Suspension Bridge for a group of US senators. This job is so awesome because I get to work with (and for) so many interesting people from all over world.
I’m having more fun now than ever before as I feel I’m finally getting my head and hands around playing this wonderful instrument. I’ve also finally worked out how to get a live nylon string guitar sound I like. That in itself has taken over 10 years to find!
Anyways, back to the gig…
The Capilano Suspension bridge is such a wonderful place to perform. It’s beautiful and peaceful. For this gig I performed with my Rumba Flamenco, Latin Jazz trio.
Here’s a link to the Capilano Suspension Bridge web site if you would like to visit there for yourself… http://www.capbridge.com/
Joining me once again on guitar was Andre Stepanian and on percussion was Lyndon Dewitt.
I arrived at 5:30pm to set up and we began at 7:20ish. The gig lasted until 10:20pm.
Once again I’ve taken my “Gig Cam” with me so you can join me behind the scenes today on the gig.
Music featured in this episode is my trio’s performance of Hotel California by the Eagles.
Today I’m up at 7 am to perform a corporate brunch event with my rumba flamenco, latin jazz trio at the Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel and Marina.
On the gig with me today will be local flamenco guitar virtuoso Andre Stepanian and drummer, now cajon master Todd McGarvey. This is going to be a really fun gig for me at Todd and haven’t performed together since are rock and roll club days in the early 80′s.
Back then Todd and I performed in a touring top 40 band called Legend. We would perform in hotel bars all over western Canada. What a great time that was as we were fresh out of high school playing in a rock and roll band. I’ll have to upload all the old photo’s as they are hilarious.
I remember one gig playing in a moose costume. Also wearing spandex, leather and tiger striped jeans with platform boots were all part of the gig. I’d never play another corporate gig again if I was to do that today!
Anyways, enough with the 80′s let’s get back to 2011…
Here is something I’ve never done before.
I created a behind the scene phone cam video of the event. I’ve never done this before so it’s a bit of a mess however if you like the idea I post more.
Here is a video that will take you behind the scenes of my gig at the Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel…

Our performance began at 11:30 am. We then performed until 12:30 pm. Then we took a short break for speeches. After that we performed again until 1:35 pm. We were then invited to have a wonderful buffet lunch while the client gave out prizes.
This was a really great event to celebrate the Green Coats at the Vancouver Airport. The Green Coats are all volunteers that work at the Vancouver Airport to assist you. They are a fantastic group of people and we had a wonderful time providing live music for their event!
Tomorrow it’s back to the new Vancouver Convention Centre to again perform for Architectural Institute of BC.
BTW… How did you like my behind the scene gig video? Would you like me to post more with video?
